چکیده

The perception-based theory of probabilistic reasoning which is outlined in this paper is not in the traditional spirit. Its principal aim is to lay the groundwork for a radical enlargement of the role of natural languages in probability theory and its applications, especially in the realm of decision analysis. To this end, probability theory is generalized by adding to the theory the capability to operate on perception-based information, e.g., “Usually Robert returns from work at about 6 p.m.” or “It is very unlikely that there will be a signi*cant increase in the price of oil in the near future”. A key idea on which perception-based theory is based is that the meaning of a proposition, p, which describes a perception, may be expressed as a generalized constraint of the form X isr R, where X is the constrained variable, R is the constraining relation and isr is a copula in which r is a discrete variable whose value de*nes the way in which R constrains X . In the theory, generalized constraints serve to de*ne imprecise probabilities, utilities and other constructs, and generalized constraint propagation is employed as a mechanism for reasoning with imprecise probabilities as well as for computation with perception-based information. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Reasoning with uncertainty and context-dependent languages

A topos of presheaves can be seen as an extension of classical set theory, where sets vary over informational states, therefore it is a powerful and expressive mathematical framework. I introduce a suitable topos of presheaves where imprecise probabilities and imprecise probabilistic reasoning can be represented. In this way we obtain a mathematical definition of imprecise-probabilistic sets. A...

Revisiting the Semantics of Interval Probabilistic Logic Programs

Two approaches to logic programming with probabilities emerged over time: bayesian reasoning and probabilistic satisfiability (PSAT). The attrac tiveness of the former is in tying the logic programming research to the body of work on Bayes networks. The second approach ties computationally reasoning about probabilities with linear programming, and allows for natural expression of imprecision i...

U−Sets as probabilistic sets

Using topos theory I prove that reasoning about probabilities can be formalized with only one simple assumption: given two sets of measures A,B, if B ⊆ A, then B is less imprecise than A.

Integrating Case-Based Inference and Approximate Reasoning for Decision Making under Uncertainty

This paper proposes a novel approach to decision analysis with uncertainty based on integrated case-based inference and approximate reasoning. The strength of case-based inference is utilized for building a situation dependent decision model without complete domain knowledge. This is achieved by deriving states probabilities and general utility estimates from the subset of retrieved cases and t...

Iranian EFL Learners' Perception of the Efficacy of Activity Theory-based Reading Comprehension

Any language classroom is a distinctive learning context offering numerous affordances that might be perceived effectively, remain unnoticed, or even act as constraints. Therefore, exploring students' perception toward a particular method of instruction is crucial since it may produce a reliable piece of evidence for teachers to confirm or refute the effectiveness of the intended instructional ...
